![]() ![]() There's the in-game Sega Club which offers classic Sega titles(Super Hang-On, Outrun and Space Harrier). With the massive amount of mini-games available, you are bound to stumble upon a few that you enjoy. Combat also includes the use of weapons, mostly melee weapons, but there is a limited number of firearms available (these are used within the fights itself, so there are no playable shootout sequences/areas in the game). The combat has a good flow to it, and you are able to upgrade your combat styles with new moves etc. Y0 consists of fighting segments, similar to a beat-em up style game and Y0 also contains a large variety of mini-games as well.Įach protagonist has 3 unique fighting/combat styles, and you're able to switch to different styles at will during combat. ![]() The game runs at a solid 60 frames-per-second, which is especially nice considering that it's a fighting game. All in-game text is presented in English, and most NPCs are voiced, but there are some situations where in-game text is used (primarily for the minor segments for Side Quests). Depending on your taste, this could be either an advantage or a disadvantage. There is no option to switch to an English voice track. Speaking of voice, Y0 is fully presented in Japanese, with English subtitles. Unfortunately, the same level of detail is not present with the protaganists, as they do not share any facial likenesses with their respective voice actor. Despite that, the facial animation, especially of the cast which are based on real life Japanese actors and actresses, are superb. Y0 does appear a bit dated (especially when compared to Yakuza 6) as the game is using assets originally used on the Yakuza games developed for the PS3. As Y0 was developed for the PS3 as well, it doesn't share the same level of graphic fidelity as Yakuza 6. Y0 is set in 1988, during the period of economic boom in Japan. Y0 is set primarily in Tokyo (Kamurucho) and Osaka (Sotenbori), with KK and GM being able to traverse and interact with both settings. Y0 focuses on the origin stories of Kazuma Kiryu (KK), the main protagonist of the Yakuza series, and Goro Majima (GM), a long-time fan favourite. Y0 is the ideal game for newcomers to the Yakuza series, as the game serves as a starting point for the series as a whole. If you have never played a Yakuza game before, and you enjoy excellent story-telling, deep and nuanced characters and solid melee combat, Yakuza is the series for you. Don't expect a GTA-like experience from the Yakuza series, as you'll be disappointed. They might appear to have similarities, but those similarities are superficial and relatively few. This is NOT a Grand Theft Auto-like game. Let's get a common misconception out of the way before we begin with this review of Yakuza 0 (Y0). From cash spilling out of the pockets of gang members you fight to Telephone Clubs, Disco Halls, or even Pocket Circuit car races, there are tons of ways to be a well-to-do gangster. The Decadence of the 1980s in Japan: Cash rules everything in the world of Yakuza 0, and in the game, there are a million ways to spend, make, or take money. With his own fighting style, abilities, and his penchant for turning sleaze into profit, stepping into the role of Yakuza's most eccentric character will provide some eye-opening insight. Embrace the Mad Dog: For the first time in a numbered game, long-time NPC Goro Majima is now playable.Combat styles can be hot-swapped during fights for some of the most intense battles in the Yakuza series to date. Plus, you don't get to be called "Dragon" without being able to knock a few heads. The Dragon's Origins: What lies in a man's past defines his future, and in this case, we learn a lot about what inspires Kiryu down the paths he takes in the rest of the Yakuza series. The clan keeps pushing his limits just to see how far he will really go to prove his loyalty. But his desire to rejoin the Yakuza Clan he was ousted from is intense, and in order to do so, Majima must complete impossible tests set by increasingly unforgiving bosses. Meanwhile, series familiar Goro Majima is living the life in Osaka, running a cabaret above board. Of course, this murder happens on a hotly coveted plot of land in Kamurocho, and Kiryu quickly finds himself in over his head trying to regain his honor and save the reputation of his savior and father figure, Shintaro Kazama. Starting off in series familiar location Kamurocho, Kiryu, a junior member of the Dojima family, gets blamed for a debt collection that ends in murder. Yakuza 0 portrays the genesis of Kazuma Kiryu, the rising Dragon of Dojima in the heyday of the economic bubble in the late 1980s.
